- Iterative Requirements Engineering Implementation.

In 2005, Allume Technology Partners recognised the need to change from a traditional structured approach of software development to a more dynamic methodology. Based on the Rational Unified Process the new approach provides Allume with the ability to more effectively deal with the challenges and risks associated with the complex environment of Tax-Management Solutions. As a result it was determined that changes to the requirements-management practices were necessary to address an organisational skills gap, and the issues of communicating the complex subject matter that is Tax.

Empulsys were engaged to mentor the requirements team in the development of requirements-management skills. Skills transferred included:

  • Effective specification of business rules.
  • Use-case modelling.
  • Blending large numbers of declarative requirements with use cases.
  • Iterative development of requirements.
  • Writing quality requirements through attention to basic grammar, and technical writing techniques.

Empulsys' approach to mentoring combined training with practical exercises that resulted in the production of actual project deliverables, and the definition of a requirements standard to satisfy the company's current and future needs. The team was able to "learn by doing" thereby accelerating and maximising Allume's return on investment.

"The Empulsys experience has produced a requirements team that are confident and motivated, while accelerating our efforts in optimizing the way we deliver software."

- Steve Ireland, Director of Software Development Allume Technology Partners
