Portions of the Rational Unified Process® needed to be updated to reflect recent industry developments and experiences. These changes were under consideration for future releases of the RUP. The RUP® product manager approached Empulsys early in 2002 with the proposition of working together with Rational to update one of the disciplines.

Empulsys used the Rational Unified Process for planning and executing the project. The Inception phase was used to identify risks and verify estimates and the Elaboration phase was used for baselining a skeleton of the content.

Many challenges encountered during the project were common with software development efforts. Even though the project team and stakeholders were seperated by 4 time zones, the project was completed within acceptable margins of the estimate. The  exceptionally high quality of the result led to it being included as part of the Rational-managed base RUP content, rather than as a separate plug-in.
